Summer and winter in Lapland

What started off as a bicycle trip in summer quickly turned into autumn as the seasons have a different rhythm in the north. When I learned more about the culture of the indigenous people of Lapland – the Sami – I was intrigued by how they have to coop with the winter. I have always been a lover of winter with its beautiful scenery’s like snow, hoarfrost, etc. So I was quickly interested to try to stay to overwinter. When I heard about the job opportunities that seemed to be a good match with what I do and like to do the choice and plan was quickly made.

Some things about my summer in Lapland:

– The summer of 2018 was a bit atypical in terms of weather ( with long dry periods with temperatures around 30°C).

– These conditions were a perfect invitation for numerous jumps in some of the thousands of lakes that Finland has. A great way to cool down during the cycling days. On one given day I have been swimming in 5 different lakes. The quality of the water is really great. It felt very purifying, healing and nourishing.

– Normally Lapland is taken over by mosquitos and other bugs during the summer, luckily for me the drones and heat made it an extremely quiet summer for that as well

– Days were quite long when I arrived in the south of Finland but since I only made it up to Lapland by the end of July I just missed the midsummer sun, the period where the sun doesn’t set. One of the good reasons to go back , maybe already this summer.

The winter in Lapland was absolutely magical. The winter arrived a bit late but I enjoyed every single cm of snow and ice, the cold, … The lights were stunning both the the sunlight just before the polar night, the twilight during the polar night with its subtle pastel colors, and off course the northern lights.
